Russell makes life drawings and acrylic portraits, which provide the basis for narrative paintings and drypoint printmaking. In both cases, the final works depend largely on the strength of the original image and the plausibility of the characters in that image. Not all original studies can be developed in this way, and the subject of the final work is always suggested by the original, so the supply of suitable characters and the subject of the works are unpredictable.
