John White

John White Two Trees Barn Through Wet Hedge

John White has been a photographer since 1976. The transition to digital was not difficult but understanding the new opportunities of digital took time to appreciate.

The use of time lapse is an interesting combination of a fixed composition combined with a dynamic weather pattern. A variation of that effect is represented in John's current project which focusses on a short section of road, only 3/4 of a mile long, to the north of Grassington. The project is called 'A bit of road' and includes what he has called Lapse of Time, in which the timelapse concept has been stretched across the seasons to see the same images repeated at different times of the day, the year and in the associated weather and light.

Studio experience

As a photographer the studio is not my workspace, however, my gallery space is the main vaulted room in my house which leads to a deck space that overlooks the river Wharfe. Although it has some access issues the open view and southerly light is stunning whatever the weather.

I print my own images to canvas and fine art paper. I use an Epson 44" Large format printer which I also use to print giclee prints for local artists. In the gallery, there will be monitors displaying time-lapse and Lapse of Time sequences. I like big images and print regularly to 40" sizes, but I also have one image that is 9ft long. I intend to publish a photo-book of the 'bitofroad' project before the Open Studio event.
